Elizabeth Tompoi is a young mother, who lives in Talek, just outside the Maasai Mara National Park.
This area of Kenya is extremely remote, often with very limited access to healthcare services, including childbirth and antenatal facilities. This means that many pregnant women and mothers are exposed to common difficulties before, during and after giving birth.
Elizabeth had given birth twice, in 2019 and 2021, and on both occasions she had experienced difficulties, and her babies had died within hours of being born. Elizabeth conceived again in 2023 and, fearing more complications, managed to attend the ante-natal clinic at the Talek Health Centre, run by our partner, the MAA Trust, with support from CHASE Africa.
Given her previous difficulties, Elizabeth was treated as a high-risk patient and admitted to the maternity shelter at the newly established Talek Maternal, Neonatal and Child Health centre (MNCH) one month before her expected date of delivery.
After three weeks of monitoring and support, Elizabeth gave birth to a healthy, baby boy, named Goodluck Seria in tribute to the day he was born (Good Friday) and the support she received.

“When I hold my baby in my arms, I am so grateful to all the doctors and nurses who have looked after me, all of the staff have been so good. I would like to thank all of the partners and donors who have made this hospital possible, it is making such a difference.”
