The Makame Wildlife Management Area (WMA) is a community-owned wildlife management entity located in Kiteto District, Manyara Region, Tanzania. Established and registered in 2006 as a Community-Based Organisation. Makame WMA comprises five villages: Makame, Irkiushioibor, Ndedo, Katikati, and Ngabolo. Its governance and staff are drawn entirely from the local community.

Makame WMA’s core strength lies in its community-rooted governance and conservation expertise. The WMA operates under national wildlife regulations and has played a pioneering role in establishing sustainable, community-led natural resource management.

Makame WMA receive income from their conservation activities (including carbon funding and a hunting concession). To ensure that the local communities are benefiting from conservation activities, Makame WMA have sought education and health partners.

CHASE Africa has supported the establishment of the health programme in partnership with Honeyguide Foundation and MWEDO. The project aims to improve the health of the 25,000 people that live in the five Makame Villages. It also aims to demonstrate how conservation income can be used to improve the health and wellbeing of local communities.
