Communities Health Africa Trust
Communities Health Africa Trust (CHAT) was CHASE Africa’s first local partner. CHAT works with communities who are marginalised in Kenya, with limited access to healthcare. Many of these communities are semi-nomadic pastoralists.
CHAT and CHASE Africa have worked together since 2012 to provide mobile health service interventions in underserved and inaccessible populations.
CHASE Africa has supported CHAT’s work in Laikipia and the Ndoto Mountains. For the last few years, we have supported their programme in the Tana River area.
The roads in these areas can be challenging, therefore, CHAT uses various means of transport to reach their clients. Sometimes nurses travel on motorbikes or in 4x4s. When necessary, a team of camels bring health services to the most remote communities in northern Kenya.
In addition to providing family planning services, CHAT increases knowledge and awareness of family planning among communities. The organisation carries out youth-focused activities. Recently CHAT trained their staff in identifying, supporting and referring women affected by gender-based violence.
